The Importance of Relearning to Walk: Understanding Conscious Muscle Activation

I was a bit arrogant about myself. Since I enjoyed exercising and made it a part of my life, I thought I was a pretty good sportsman. However, a significant incident happened to me: a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament. The reason for that incident was that I didn’t know my body well. To be precise, I didn’t know how to properly use my muscles.

I ran marathons and made weekly exercise a hobby, but I had been exercising just for fun without any proper coaching or guidance, which led to a critical injury. Not knowing it was a cruciate ligament rupture, I kept pushing myself by participating in competitions, and my cartilage tore in more than four additional places. As a result, I underwent an 8-hour long surgery, used crutches, and was faced with the crossroads of whether I could exercise again, falling into despair.

After surgery, I started rehabilitation exercises to prevent muscle loss. While learning a new way of walking, I realized that I hadn’t even been walking properly. Proper walking was about focusing my awareness on my muscles. It was beneficial to feel the muscles supporting the bones, rather than walking with the bones, and to see those muscles grow. I realized that I had been living my life without even being conscious of my muscles. I trained my muscle awareness for the first time and moved my body. Only then did I realize what the proper way to use muscles was.

Expanding from walking to how to use my body and which muscles to focus on, I finally started using my muscles properly. Exercise is not good for the body in itself. It is good for the body when done correctly. Ignorance is harmful and sinful. I bless you to check your gait and transition to a new life of conscious exercise.
