You Are What You Eat : A Personal Awakening Inspired by Feuerbach

We don’t often think about the concept of what we eat.

Initially, we suckle to live,

we are fed baby food,

and we spend our childhood eating prepared meals, growing up that way.

We eat whatever is given to us,

and then we encounter the world of snacks.

From that point on, whenever we have pocket money,

we start buying the sweets, drinks, and snacks we want, making the most of our allowance. It’s a very natural and obvious flow. However, once I, as the master of my own consciousness, took my place, things could never be the same. We sometimes consume processed foods that are not really food, hardly deserving of the name, and are unhealthy. These are not food, but they are treated as such, easily exposed and tempting people. People fall for that temptation so easily. We are so greatly governed by our environment.

The German philosopher Ludwig Feuerbach expressed it this way in his book “The Essence of Christianity (Das Wesen des Christentums)”:

“Der Mensch ist, was er ißt.” (Man is what he eats.)

Feuerbach believed that food is a fundamental element shaping human emotions, thoughts, and even morality. He argued that those who consume poor and unhealthy food may also have poor and unhealthy ways of thinking and feeling, while those who eat healthy and good food can maintain a healthier and more positive mental state. It’s truly astonishing how insightful this man, born in the 1800s, was.

Having lived without much thought about what I ate, it was going to a fertility clinic that made me grasp the concept. Initially, I went to a Korean traditional medicine clinic for infertility, and I had to put an X on everything about my diet and lifestyle. I was even living under the illusion that 100% orange juice was truly 100% natural oranges. I had been fooled by the tricks of processed food marketing.

It was Seokmun Breathing that gave me a concept of vegetarianism and meat-eating. In Seokmun Breathing, they advise avoiding foods that hinder Ki training, and they prohibited meat and alcohol. While all meats are said to impede the accumulation of Ki, pork and chicken were considered the most obstructive.

In the midst of this, by encountering various books that made me realize the unhealthiness of meat-eating, I naturally transitioned to a pescetarian diet. I am still striving towards becoming fully vegan.

The air we breathe, the food we eat, these two things directly impact our bodies. Everything I consume in fact becomes a part of me, so what I eat is truly what I become. After realizing this simple but clear concept, I became meticulous about what I eat.

As much as possible, I base my diet on organic ingredients and strive to eat the healthiest food in the world. After eating a healthy meal, I am confident enough to think, “No one has eaten a healthier meal than this!” I believe that I must be healthy to raise my babies healthily, and that everyone I bless and meet can be healthy. To be healthy, I must naturally choose only what is healthy.
